Urgent Action Needed
Dear Friend,This Wednesday, January 27, at 9:30 a.m., the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit will hear the case SpeechNow v. FEC to decide if billionaires have the “constitutional right” to pollute political campaigns to any degree that they see fit. We need to respond. I just contacted the clerk of the Court to share my thoughts and voice my support for real freedom of speech....
Here we go again
Begin forwarded message: Dear George, Unlike you and me, corporations don’t eat, drink, get married, vote, or bathe. And they never sleep. Which is why they have already launched another attack on our democracy, due to hit ground zero tomorrow, Wednesday, January 27, at 9:30 a.m. Last week, it was the Citizens United case. That case not only permits unlimited campaign spending by huge...

What was your favorite TV show as a child?
Which decade? ;-) Liked Knight Rider (thought KITT was cool). Every evening mom, dad, and I would all watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Liked Airwolf. Liked Family Ties. I dunno, I’d say my FAVORITE show was Married With Children or Alf. (tie)

If you had your own talk show, who would your first three guests be?
That’s a tough one! I’d say Bill Maher, Neil Patrick Harris, and Al Franken. I think those are eclectic enough guests to make for an interesting show. :-) Of course, if I had my own talk show, I’d like it to be a conversation with me and a bunch of guests just sitting in a living room (or...

What 3 things do you think will become obsolete in the next ten years?
1. POTS. (Plain-Old-Telephone-Service). In 10 years time we as a Country will have moved on to VoIP and other forms of telecommunication.
2. Incandescent Light Bulbs. LED technology, and Compact Fluorescents will be the norm and not the exception everywhere.
3. Plastic Bags.

Saving Democracy
Dear Friend,This week, five Supreme Court Justices stabbed at the heart of democracy, our electoral system. They overturned over 100 years of statute and precedent, and declared that corporations can spend all the money that they want to buy elections. In fact, these five men in robes declared, they have a constitutional right to do so.Now, we have to fight. That’s why I just signed Rep. Alan...

Begin forwarded message: Dear George, Thanks to so many of you for contacting Chairman Conyers Friday and thanking him for helping to save our democracy. His office was overwhelmed with calls and e-mails. One of his staffers said that it was “like working the phones at a telethon.” I’ve been thinking a little more about the Supreme Court’s decision. This ruling gives...

What was your first paying job?
I was 16, and was a telemarketer for the Central Florida Firefighter’s Council raising money to support injured firefighters and their families. Didn’t have a car so walked to work every night after school. The office was located right across the street from Olde Dixie Fried Chicken and Mr. Munroe’s Supermarket between Belle...

Where’s your favorite place to buy clothes?
I gave up having to have the latest fashion when I started having to buy my own clothes, around 1988 or so. :-) Since then, it’s been Target, JC Penny, K&G. If it’s on sale, all the better!

jurisprudenceMoney Isn’t Speech and Corporations Aren’t PeopleThe misguided theories behind the Supreme Court’s ruling on campaign finance reform.By David Kairys Posted Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at 6:03 PM ET Go back almost a century, to the time when the modern corporation was created, and you’ll find laws that prohibit or limit the use of corporate money in elections....
"We the corporations" | Move to Amend
“We the corporations” On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government. Human beings are people; corporations are legal fictions. The Supreme Court is misguided in principle, and wrong on...

NASA - 2009: Second Warmest Year on Record; End of...
2009 was tied for the second warmest year in the modern record, a new NASA analysis of global surface temperature shows. The analysis, conducted by the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, also shows that in the Southern Hemisphere, 2009 was the warmest year since modern records began in 1880. Although 2008 was the coolest year of the decade — due to strong...

To everyone complaining about Google Nexus One...
Google needs to do a better job educating its customers and the public what everyone’s roles are. (Disclaimer: I bought a Nexus One before Andy Rubin could finish his sentence announcing the Google Phone store was now live.) Google is the retailer. Think of it as Best Buy or Amazon.com or Target. Don’t think of it as Walmart because Google hasn’t done anything to warrant that...

Marc Hedlund sez, “Wesabe just open sourced a project called Grendel that makes it easy for web apps to encrypt data using the user’s login password, and only decrypt that data when the user is logged in. Let’s say you’re using a word processing web app and don’t want your documents stored plaintext — the web app could use Grendel to easily encrypt your...
Even Amazon can't keep its EULA story straight...
When Amazon “sells” you a Kindle ebook, they don’t really sell it to you. If you read the fine-print, you’ll see that they’re waving their hands furiously and declaring that you aren’t “buying” the book, but rather “taking a license to a limited set of uses” for the book. Whereas a book that you buy comes with all kinds of rights,...
